The pens we give away to our visitors indicate that we are "An Ephesians 4:12-16 Church". What do we mean by such a cryptic phrase? The phrase contains layers of meaning because the passage itself is a deep mine full of layers of valuable material which result in a philosophy of ministry. One of the "layers" is related to our understanding of ministry and is helpful when considering a ministry overview. According to the passage, it is Christ who gives gifted men to the church who are then responsible to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12). First Baptist Church seeks to operate with this Biblical understanding. As often as possible, our ministries are designed to be led by the members of the congregation in submission to and as an expression of this philosophy. The passage also describes the purpose of our ministries, namely that each ministry ought to move our congregation forward toward centrality upon a deepening understanding of the faith (Ephesians 4:13-14), a personal and practical knowledge of Jesus the Christ (Ephesians 4:13), and genuine other-focused love (Ephesians 4:15-16). The ministries you find listed in the side bar are our attempt at melding practical twenty-first century living with first century theology and philosophy.
